BVI Dance School Class Descriptions

Tots Dance 4-5 yrs

Tots Dance for our youngest dancers prepares them for further dance exploration by introducing basic ballet, creative movement, rhythm and coordination exercises.

Ballet

Classes offered in traditional ballet, for all age groups; from beginners to advanced students these classes will always be our school favorites! Our ballet classes are all based on a combination of Cecchetti Method and Royal Academy of Dance Syllabus.  More advanced levels include training in Pointework or “toe dance”.  All dance forms benefit from ballet training so it is always advised to begin any dance education with ballet classes.

Hip Hop/Pop & Lock Ages 7 and up

Students will learn how to Hip Hop style, a pop, lock, break, and groove dance truly American style with roots in African and Caribbean dance originating in NYC in the late 70s.  Students should dress comfortably and wear gym shoes.

Jazz Dance

Jazz Dance can include a broad range of dance styles. Before the 1950s, jazz dance referred to dance styles that originated from African American vernacular dance. Jazz dance was an integral part of Jazz music until the end of the swing era in the late 1940s. In the 1950s, a new genre of jazz dance — modern jazz dance — emerged, with roots in Caribbean traditional dance. Every individual style of jazz dance has roots traceable to one of these two distinct origins. Jazz was a big hit in the 1950’s and it is still a well-loved style of dance all over the world.

Fusion Dance Ages 5 and UP

A great introduction to alternative dance styles such as hip hop, jazz and tap dancing.

Combining training in all three of these dance techniques the student can experiment with  these styles to find the dance forms they may want to later concentrate on.

Modern Dance (teens/ adults)

Created by revolutionaries like Isadora Duncan and Loie Fuller at the turn of the 20th century, Modern dance trains the dancer to move naturally from his/her center.  Class will feature a wide variety of Modern techniques, including Graham, Limon, and Horton; as well as body-conditioning exercises like Yoga and Pilates.

Contemporary dance

This is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet. Contemporary dancers strive to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements. This dance form is highly suggested as a second class choice of higher level ballet students as well as students NOT in ballet that still want to express themselves with fluidity and grace with a modern flair.

Mini's (6-9 yrs) and Junior (10-14 yrs) Dance Teams

Concentrated training in jazz, hip hop, theater dance and choreography all with emphasis on performance team work.  These classes perform around the territory all thru the year and are invitational only. Students wishing to join these teams must request an audition and dedicate themselves to attending classes and rehearsals.
